Job Purpose

• To oversee assigned shift operation at assigned section of WTP and ETP including
• Unloading, storage and distribution of fuel (FO, LNG and IPA) produced in-house at Birla Copper at Dahej
• Recording water received from GIDC
• Recording disposal of the residue to Gypsum as Solid Land Fill.
• To ensure compliance of all quality, safety, health, hygiene and environment parameters and statutory compliances through strict monitoring of operations, process control and improvement in the area of operation

Job Context

Water is supplied by GIDC as per contracted terms to the Birla Copper Plant at Dahej, under GIDC industrial area. Recycled water from operations, is treated through filtration, polymerisation, ion exchange to produce plant water, soft water, de-mineralised water for consumption at the plant as well the colony. The role involves monitoring that water is received from GIDC as per contracted terms. The critical aspect of the role is ensuring maintenance of the equipment under area of jurisdiction through coordination with the Engineering team as well as treatment and recycling of effluents and waste water discharged by operations.

Job Challenges

• Infrastructural inadequacies have to be dealt with continuously (Load of ETP 1 has been exceeded and modified internally. ETP 2 was not built as per capacity and is unable to perform as required, creating operating issues)
• Housekeeping becomes a major challenge as a large amount of sludge has to be cleaned manually every month
• Extreme alertness is required for ensuring continuous compliance with respect to pollution control as online meters monitor parameter of environmental norms and collating data for GPCB/CPCB

Supporting Actions

Planning

Giving inputs for monitoring daily LNG consumption requirement of Smelter 1 and Smelter 3 and making nomination for daily supply with gas suppliers to eliminate penalties for excess or short consumption

Giving inputs for planning preventive maintenance and shutdowns of ETPs, WTPs, STPs, RO Plant as well as fuel-gas pipelines, as applicable under area of jurisdiction, and routine preventive maintenance to improve plant uptime

Planning to make daily resources for shift operations

Operational Excellence

Achieving stipulated quality and quantity targets during the assigned shift

Treating effluents generated by SAP 1,3 plant, CCR 1,2,3 and Refinery 1, 3 during the assigned shift

Treating water received from GIDC on a daily basis as well as RO water to match specifications during the assigned shift

Unloading, storing and supplying specified quantities of FO, LNG and IPA to various SBUs through a distribution network of pipelines during the assigned shift

Executing SOPs and WI during the assigned shift

Budgetary Controls

Executing resource utilization, in assigned area, keeping in view overall allocation and budget during the assigned shift

Tracking and controlling spares and consumable usage

Tracking and controlling expenses vis a vis budgets without sacrificing safety and environment norms

Compliance

Implementing compliance with respect to quality norms, EHA and IMS

Implementing statutory norms for BOD and COD in sewage water

Dumping gypsum as per norms

Operating ETP-WTP-STP-RO and upcoming ZLD as per statutory requirement

Customer-centricity

Implementing appropriate specifications of the treated water and effluent for consumption in operations as applicable in the assigned areas during the assigned shift:

Silica less than 0.02 TPA conductivity <.3 micro siemens per cm2 in DM water

Hardness less than 1 in soft water

Turbidity less than 2ppm in plant water

Conductivity less than 500, arsenic less than 0.5ppm, hardness less than 5ppm in RO permeate

Generating periodic MIS relating to performance and utilisation of equipment as well as compliance of stipulated parameters mandated by quality systems and statutes in areas of jurisdiction

Minimising response time and resolving complaints with respect to quality and quantity of fuel, water and effluent during assigned shift

Technical competencies

• Degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering or post graduation in Chemistry
• Domain knowledge with respect to ETP, WTP, RO Plant, STP operations and technology
